ACCOMMODATIONS

A cozy second-story suite is available for short and long-term stays. Known as the Treehouse, it becomes the bridal suite for newlyweds and a comfortable retreat for other guests. It features a bathroom with shower, a queen-size bed, a vanity and mirror, a writing desk, two upholstered club chairs for reading, good reading lamps, a full bookshelf, a dresser, a bistro table and two chairs, magazine, a stereo and a coat rack.

A white mink wrap awaits the bride who gets chilled and umbrellas are handy for the short walk to the Gathering Hall. There is plenty of room for a bride to primp with the help of her attendants, and big picture windows afford a view of arriving guests. When festivities are over--when the bonfire has burned down to coals and all the wedding gifts are locked away--bride and groom can safely wander to a waiting bed and chilled champagne, if they desire.

Downstairs in the breezeway, lodgers will find coffee or tea, juice and fresh local pastries in the morning. They can linger indoors in comfort or relax on the adjacent patio, which has a long view of Maidenwood’s tall grass prairie flowers and the stone circle built of local limestone.

OTHER ATTRACTIONS ON SITE

Guests are welcome to hike the wide and grassy trails that thread through the woods and meadows of Maidenwood. The property abuts acreage owned by the West Wisconsin Land Trust and open to the public for considerate enjoyment. Spring-fed Pine Creek, a class-one trout stream recently upgraded by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, lies within walking distance of Maidenwood’s front door. Along Pine Creek runs Route 51, an official Wisconsin Rustic Road, which crosses the creek in three places. You can hike to the picture-perfect Legion Club along the creek or just dally and enjoy the beautiful woodland ecosystem. In the spring, Dutchman’s breeches, spring beauty and trillium will delight you, and in summer the cooler temperatures of the Pine Creek Valley will refresh you.

Since Maidenwood and the Pine Creek Valley are located on the great Mississippi River flyway, bird life is abundant. A checklist of local and seasonal species is available. Guests have reported sighting almost every type of local fauna--deer, fox, turkey, coyote, fisher (a rare treat), raccoon, skunk, and so on. (The Pine Creek bear is very elusive!)

In the middle of the tall grass prairie, you can rest on a weathered redwood bench and watch an eagle circle above or just gaze at the distant stretch of Lake Pepin where sailboats, barges and an occasional American Queen passenger boat slip by.

You are also welcome to take a picnic lunch or a traveling tea party to the Viewpoint, the Basswood meadow, the Climbing Tree, the Apple Arbor or any of  the many sweet spots on the Maidenwood property. Rides are available for the handicapped.
